The espresso martini is one of the few modern classics. It was created in the 1980s by London bartender Dick Bradsell, who famously claimed a customer asked him for a drink that would “wake me up and then mess me up.” His solution was vodka, coffee liqueur and fresh espresso shaken together into a silky cocktail. Decades later it remains a favourite for good reason: rich coffee flavour, a little sweetness and just enough caffeine to keep the night going.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Add ingredients to a cocktail shaker. Fill shaker to the brim with ice (plenty of ice gives you a better foam).

  2. Shake hard for about 15 seconds until the shaker is frosted. The shake is what creates the creamy foam that sits on top of the drink.

  3. Strain into a chilled coupe glass and garnish with three coffee beans.

A strong shake is key here. If the top of the drink has a thick, silky foam, you’ve nailed it.
